Emmanuel Macron Faces Calls for Snap Election as National Instability Escalates in the nation.

Former PM Philippe, a former supporter of Emmanuel Macron, has expressed his backing for early presidential elections considering the gravity of the political crisis affecting the country.

The comments by the former PM, a key moderate right candidate to succeed Emmanuel Macron, coincided with the outgoing prime minister, Lecornu, initiated a desperate effort to rally bipartisan endorsement for a new cabinet to extricate the nation out of its deepening parliamentary gridlock.

Time is of the essence, the former PM told the media. We cannot continue what we have been undergoing for the past several months. A further year and a half is excessive and it is hurting our nation. The political game we are participating in today is alarming.

His remarks were supported by the National Rally leader, the chief of the right-wing RN, who recently declared he, too, supported initially a dissolution of parliament, then parliamentary elections or early presidential elections.

The president has requested Sébastien Lecornu, who stepped down on the start of the week less than four weeks after he was named and 14 hours after his administration was unveiled, to remain for 48 hours to try to save the government and devise a solution from the turmoil.

The president has indicated he is ready to take responsibility in the event of failure, sources at the Elysée Palace have told local media, a remark widely interpreted as implying he would announce premature parliamentary polls.

Rising Unrest Among the President's Own Ranks

There were also signs of increasing discontent among the president's allies, with Gabriel Attal, another former prime minister, who leads the Macron's party, stating on Monday night he could not comprehend the president's choices and it was the moment for a different strategy.

The outgoing PM, who resigned after opposition parties and allies alike condemned his cabinet for not representing enough of a departure from past administrations, was holding talks with group heads from early in the day at his premises in an bid to resolve the stalemate.

Background of the Crisis

France has been in a political crisis for since last year since the president called a snap election in the previous year that resulted in a hung parliament separated into 3 more or less comparable factions: socialist groups, right-wing and his centrist bloc, with no majority.

Lecornu was named the briefest-serving premier in modern French history when he stepped down, the country's fifth prime minister since the president's 2022 victory and the 3rd since the assembly dissolution of last year.
